This volume documents recent progress in developing novel
topical corticosteroids that are free of adverse effects such as skin atrophy and
adrenal suppression. The contributors show that these adverse effects can be substantially reduced by designing steroids that are rapidly metabolized by the skin and present preclinical and clinical studies on a newly developed steroid, prednicarbate. These studies show that largely because of its metabolic transformation in the skin, prednicarbate does not produce significant cutaneous atrophy when applied nonocclusively and does not cause marked depression of plasma cortisol levels in either adult or pediatric subjects.
