Cytomegalovirus retinitis and corneal keratitis are two clinically significant ocular viral infections, induced by cytomegalovirus and
herpes simplex virus type 1, respectively. Although ganciclovir is primarily indicated for treating
cytomegalovirus infections, the drug exhibits significant antiviral activity against all herpes viruses. However, factors such as low solubility and poor transcellular permeability, limit ganciclovir's utility in treating ocular herpes infections.
